Portfolio feedback from Owen Glidersleeve:

Owen Glidersleeve is part of the Evening Tweed Collective based in London. His style of work was my main form of inspiration for designing the Ikea brief the way i did - by actually creating a 3D set with cut out 2D paper based elements.

His work to me is extremely inspirational so I thought i would get in contact to show my appreciation and gain feedback on my style and professional portfolio. Here is what he said:

Hi Lucy,

Thanks for getting in touch. It's a big compliment that my work has in some way inspired you to continue down your hand-rendered illustration path. The kind words are much appreciated.

I get sent through quite a few people's portfolios but rarely do I see work as nice as yours. I really like your illustration style, especially the posters and promotional material you've made for the Stangeways night. A great use of collage and you're hand-rendered type is very charming. You obviously enjoy this way of working which is great, and it would be nice to see more of this style of work in your portfolio. I'm sure you're going to do very well, so keep at it.

Good luck with the rest of your course.

All the best,
Owen

In response I emailed back questioning where he thought would be appropriate collectives or design studios to gain work experience:

The stuff you do is quite specific, so you might be better off interning with a freelance illustrator to see how that world works. It's what I did when I graduated, and found it a lot more useful than being at a studio in terms of learning about the illustration world.

You should try contacting the guys at the Peepshow Collective. I'm sure one of them would like some help.

Good luck!

Best,
Owen
